Summertime Employment Pointers

Regulations & Compliance | May 2015

As the summer draws near, many organizations hire interns or seasonal help for increasing demand in the workforce. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. If hiring someone under the age of 18, each state has varying work permit requirements.
  2. If looking to have an unpaid intern, you must meet specific legal requirements to avoid paying at least minimum wage.
  3. All interns, paid and unpaid, must be provided with workers’ compensation coverage. If your coverage is through Tilson, you must make sure we’re aware of all interns and the number of hours they work each month for annual audit purposes and in case of injury.
  4. If hiring seasonal employees who may stay on in the fall, you must change their status at the end of the summer to reflect the hours they worked. This is a new requirement arising from health care reform.

As always, our HR and Account Management teams are here to help you with these unique workplace issues. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions and keep us informed!
